Outpatient Ambulatory Surgery
Outpatient ambulatory surgery, also called outpatient or same-day surgery, constitutes an important part of the overall surgical treatment of patients in Bulgaria. Any standard surgical clinic needs a small operating room and sterile dressing-room as a bare minimum in order to function. It is not a problem if the last two rooms are united into one in order to better quality of services provided.
In outpatient clinics, examinations, dressings, treatment, and outpatient procedures under local anesthesia are performed, and medical records are documented.
The first meeting between the surgeon and the patient is called a primary examination. Very often patients themselves determine the need to be examined by a surgeon, which may prove incorrect and may lead to them being directed to another specialist.
After the examination, the surgeon may recommend tests or consultations with other specialists in order to clarify the situation and provide quality surgical care. They can be absolutely necessary or elective. Without this research, a surgeon cannot help, so follow his or her recommendations.
Sometimes additional examinations are necessary to assess the results of treatment and reassess the way a condition has been behaving. These are called secondary or control examinations. Patients must bring the results of the prescribed tests to these appointments.
Another important function of outpatient surgeries is invasive procedures: bandaging, treatment, and minor outpatient procedures performed under local anesthesia. Bandaging and treatment may be performed by either the surgeon or the nurse. However, operations are performed only by the surgeon. The most common minor outpatient surgeries are related to:
Tumors of the surface of the skin and under the skin
Lipomas
Atheroma
Fibroids
Moles
Corns
Inflammatory diseases of surface of the skin and under the skin
Abscesses
Phlegmons
Pilonidal sinuses
Ingrown nails
Diseases of the anus
Hemorrhoid fissures
Fistulae
Perianal abscesses
Wounds, atonic and septic, and their consequences
Scars of operational and traumatic wounds
Keloids
Sometimes, patients come to clinics with diseases that would be better treated by specialists. As there are enough specialists in Bulgaria, it is appropriate that they are directed to them. So, the quality of service the patient receives corresponds to the development of surgery at the level of sub-specialties.
The outpatient treatment I offer my patients is carried out in the Polyclinic of Tokuda Hospital and in the „Gogol Street” Medical Center, http://www.imc-sofia.com/. They have clinics for primary and consultative examinations and work closely with all the departments of the hospital. Services performed include primary and regular check-ups, bandaging, and other procedures and treatments. When general anesthesia is not required, small and medium-sized operations can also be performed here.
For the convenience of patients and their companions, and to shorten waiting time, it is advisable to schedule an appointment on the phone.
